Four Indictments In, Where Is the Charge of Treason Against Donald Trump?

Need the ultimate proof that Republicans think rules are for other people?

Here is Rudy Giuliani, someone who pioneered the use of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act when he was a U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, finding himself indicted on RICO charges for his role in assisting a lawless president in a “criminal organization,” alongside 18 others seeking to subvert the 2020 election results in Georgia.

Giuliani would’ve known that his activities were illegal. But did he consider — much less anticipate — that a RICO connection could be made regarding the activities he conducted on behalf of his “mob boss” seeking to overturn the 2020 Georgia elections? If yes, did he consider that Georgia governors cannot issue pardons in RICO cases, or that presidents cannot issue pardons at the state level? Did he lose any sleep at all over the mandatory, minimum five-year sentence that accompanies RICO convictions? Seriously, did all of Trump’s “best” attorneys, charged in the Georgia indictment, just ultimately decide, fuck it, let’s risk jail time and our law licenses and go for broke?

Fulton County District Attorney (DA) Fani Willis is making each look like the consummate fool in the naughty corner — wearing a dunce cap.

Some may call this development “irony.” Not me. This is what happens when corrupt people are blinded by power, greed and their own depravity. Unbridled pride — read that, stupidity — is always on full display before they fall. Yet, they persist. The repeatedly unrepentant are a special breed of crazy.

Indeed, let it be known for 2024 that depravity is the new playground in which the Republican Party operates. No constitutional boundaries remain sacrosanct in their attempt to convert America into a fascist, authoritarian society. No lie is too big. Russian interference in our elections is not only welcome but encouraged. Disenfranchising voters through gerrymandering is their new normal. Marginalizing people with whom they do not agree is enshrined into law. Defrauding civil and human rights are justified through a reunification of church and state. Corrupting federal judges and buying Supreme Court justices are par for the course. Having a twice-impeached, four-time indicted, disgraced sex-offender ex-president already rejected by The People, who will likely end up behind bars, is now accepted as the best example of who they are and their solution for America’s problems and her weakened standing in the world.

The foregoing aside, and four criminal indictments later, why haven’t charges of treason been brought against Trump or any of his co-conspirators at the federal level?

Before the Georgia indictment, Trump had been indicted in Washington D.C. in the special counsel’s 2020 election interference investigation for conspiring to defraud the United States, conspiring to disenfranchise voters, and conspiring and attempting to obstruct an official proceeding. In that indictment, prosecutors revealed that Trump “was determined to remain in power” after losing the 2020 election and that he and six unindicted co-conspirators orchestrated a plot to overturn the results on, and leading up to, January 6, 2021.

Does that not constitute treason?

By its very definition, treason is “the crime of betraying one’s country, especially by attempting to kill the sovereign or overthrow the government.”

Moreover, in the Jan. 6 insurrection, was there a connection between Trump and the recently indicted 18? Enquiring minds want to know. Already, two law professors active in the Federalist Society have presented arguments highlighting why, under the 14th Amendment, Trump’s insurrection activities make him ineligible to hold government office. Surely, treason seals that deal.

It seems to me that Special Counsel Jack Smith’s work is not done. Yet, there are rallying cries by former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich to “cut off” funding for the special counsel’s office. Talk about not reading the room. Or understanding that Trump’s criminal gig is up. It is time now for accountability, something seemingly missing from the new Republican-MAGA DNA. The attack on our nation’s Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 was an unprecedented assault on the seat of American democracy. None should escape judgment for that. Consequences are the only recourse to stymie the advance of MAGA fascists — the Jim Jordans and Marjorie Taylor Greens.

As I digest this latest set of criminal indictments against Trump and 18 co-defendants, I note that DA Willis gave them until noon on Aug. 25 to voluntarily surrender for arraignment. It will be an auspicious day. Not solely because I believe that this is the indictment that will end Trump’s reign of terror on America. It is also my birthday. And I choose to accept this development as a personal gift from the universe. I have consistently said on record since 2015 — long before it was articulated by any anchor or analyst — that Donald Trump was going to jail.

I’m also keeping in mind that there are still 30 other unnamed co-conspirators who have yet to be indicted in Georgia. So, Lindsey Graham, Bitch, I’m looking at you. Make my day.
