Thank You, Nancy Pelosi, But It’s Time

Part of the beauty and significance of critical thinking is the ability to hold two conflicting arguments in equal measure at the same time.

Indeed, there’s a season for everything, as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has now said in her statement regarding the loss of her position and her decision, at 82, not to seek re-election for it. Her position as House Speaker and the role she has played at this juncture will live on in American history. She has been one of the greatest leaders of the House — fearless and unafraid to confront those like Donald Trump who present a direct challenge to our Constitutional principles and the rule of law. As the first woman to become House Speaker, Ms. Pelosi has become an amazing example and standard bearer for women in this country. Like former First Lady, Senator of New York and Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton, she has shown that the political “glass ceiling” is breakable and that, as women, we can rise and become equal to or greater than many of our powerful male predecessors and counterparts, even in a hostile work environment. In stilettos to boot. Ms. Pelosi will forever be appreciated and loved by more than half the country — the half whose world view is clear eyed and not clouded by conspiracy theories and religious zealotry.

That said, I also know that the time had come for Ms. Pelosi to vacate that position. The Party still needs her feisty will and input, but it’s time to pass the baton to the next generation. The Democratic Party is losing touch with the fight that is needed to secure their position — and this country — moving forward. In circumstances such as we’ve seen in a country now flirting with fascism, the vote for sanity and a continuance of our democracy should not be this close. We have to rise now above personalities to get our strategies and messaging on point. The time has never been more critical.

(AP) House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that she will not seek a leadership position in the new Congress, a pivotal realignment making way for a new generation of leaders after Democrats lost control of the House to Republicans in the midterm elections.

Indeed, I look forward now to how the face of the Party will change to meet the challenges and make decisions for the coming generations who will be most affected by the decision-making and political actions we take now.

Nevertheless, for all you’ve done, all the personal sacrifices made, which have included orchestrated allegations and disinformation seeking to demonize you, threats to your personal safety, and physical attacks on your family by hyper-partisan political operatives, I thank you, Ms. Pelosi.

Profoundly.
